Restorative dentistry is any service that repairs a tooth or replaces one: fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures and implants, up to a full-mouth reconstruction.
It works toward two goals, often both at once: returning the tooth to full function, and returning it to its natural appearance. We keep as much of your own tooth as the case allows, and replace only what has to be replaced.
Most people need restorative work at some point. Whether that means one filling or something larger is usually decided by how well the six-month checkups were kept.

What's the difference between restorative and cosmetic dentistry?
Restorative dentistry is aimed at your dental health and function. Cosmetic dentistry is aimed at appearance. Plenty of services do both at once.
Are restorative procedures painful?
Local anesthetic keeps the treatment itself comfortable. Some soreness afterwards is normal, manageable with pain relief, and usually short-lived.
How long is the recovery?
It varies with the procedure and the number of teeth. A single filling and you're back to your routine straight away; implant surgery is quick, but plan on a few days. Your dentist will tell you what to expect.
What are the risks?
Sensitivity or soreness is the most common. Infection, or a reaction to the metals used, is rare. Crowns can chip or loosen over time. The greater risk is leaving decay untreated. That is what turns a filling into a root canal or an extraction.
