Gums & Periodontics
For gums that bleed when you brush, breath that will not clear, or a tooth that feels loose. Treatment is staged to how far it has gone: a deep cleaning, laser therapy, gum surgery.

Periodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with what holds your teeth in place: the gums, the bone, and the connective tissue beneath them.
Two forms are by far the most common. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, caused by plaque building up on the teeth. Left untreated it advances to periodontitis, the more serious form, which can end in tooth loss.
Our periodontal team has advanced training in diagnosing and treating both, from scaling and root planing through laser therapy, and gum surgery where the disease has gone further. Periodontal disease has been linked to heart disease and stroke, which is why we treat it as more than a dental problem.

What is periodontics?
The branch of dentistry that diagnoses, treats and prevents periodontal disease and the conditions around it.
What are the signs of gum disease?
Bleeding gums, bad breath, swollen or tender gums, and teeth that feel loose or have shifted.
What causes it?
Bacterial infection in the gums and the bone supporting the teeth. Usually it starts with plaque left too long, made worse by smoking, genetics and certain medical conditions.
How is it diagnosed?
With a comprehensive dental examination, including X-rays and measurements of the pocket depths around each tooth.
