Additional Periodontal Disease Information

We Love Pink Gums

Periodontal disease is commonly known by several names such as gingivitis, pyorrhea, and periodontitis. lt is usually an infection of the gum tissue and bone around the teeth caused by plaque biofilm. Periodontal disease is linked to numerous health concerns such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, the signs and symptoms may go unnoticed in the earliest stages of the disease process. Healthy gum tissue should be firm, pink and fit tightly around the teeth. Healthy gum tissue should not bleed when brushed!
Common symptoms of periodontal disease may include:
  • Gums that bleed when you brush, floss, or use a toothpick
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Unpleasant tastes in your mouth
  • Gums that are red, swollen, or tender
  • Gums that exude pus when compressed
  • Teeth that are shifting position or become loose
  • Receding gums

The American Dental Association states that 3 out of every 4 adults have some form of periodontal disease. Periodontal disease, left untreated, may lead to the eventual loss of teeth. The bacteria found in plaque releases toxins that irritate the gum tissue causing a breakdown in gum tissue and underlying bone that may result in pocketing. Plaque is continually forming in the mouth and needs to be thoroughly removed daily.

Our office has a program to address periodontal disease. The program uses an instrument for proper home care as well as in-office procedures. The goal of our periodontal treatment program is to control the bacteria responsible for the infection, decrease bleeding, and reduce pocket depth. An important component of our program is to provide you with the information, techniques, and instruments you need to aid in controlling the disease process.

We urge you to make an appointment for a thorough evaluation of your periodontal status. Our office staff will be glad to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have. Sometimes we can do a soft tissue management program which can be managed by the general dentist rather than the periodontist. You can nip this incipient disease in time before it becomes a serious gum problem. Come in if you have concerns regarding yours gums bleeding or bad breath.
